Overview

Kidepo Valley National Park is one of Africa’s most remote and breathtaking wilderness destinations. Located in the rugged northeastern corner of Uganda, this park is known for its dramatic landscapes, sweeping savannah plains, and untouched wildlife encounters. Activities to Do in Kidepo National Park

1. Game Drives

Explore the vast Narus and Kidepo valleys, home to elephants, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, hyenas, leopards, and over 77 mammal species. Morning and evening drives offer the best wildlife viewing.

2. Bird Watching

Kidepo hosts more than 475 bird species. It is one of the best birding destinations in Uganda, famous for species like the Karamoja Apalis, Kori bustard, and ostriches.

3. Cultural Experiences with the Karamojong & Ik Communities

Visit the fascinating Karamojong pastoralists and the remote Ik tribe living in the Morungole Mountains. Learn about their traditions, dances, and lifestyle that have remained unchanged for centuries.

4. Nature Walks & Hiking

Take guided walks across the savannah plains, along riverbeds, or up the scenic Lonyili and Morungole Mountains. These walks offer close wildlife encounters and spectacular views of the landscape.

Best Time to Visit Kidepo Valley National Park

Dry Season (June–September & December–February)

 

Best time to visit.


Wildlife gathers around water sources, making animals easy to spot. Roads are also more accessible during this period.

Wet Season (March–May & October–November)

The park becomes greener and the landscapes are stunning. Bird lovers enjoy this season, but some roads may be challenging due to rainfall.

 

What to Wear in Kidepo


    •    Light, breathable clothing in neutral colors (khaki, beige, olive)
   •    Long-sleeved shirts & trousers for protection from sun and insects
   •    A warm jacket or fleece – mornings and evenings can be cold
   •    A hat & sunglasses for sun protection
   •    Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots
   •    Rain jacket if visiting in the wet season

What to Expect Before Visiting

1. Remote, Untouched Wilderness

Kidepo is one of the least visited but most rewarding national parks in East Africa. Expect raw nature, open landscapes, and minimal crowds.

2. Long Travel Distances

Reaching Kidepo by road takes several hours from major cities. The journey is scenic but rough in some sections. Flights are available for guests who prefer faster access.

3. Abundant Wildlife

Unlike many parks, animals here roam freely and in large numbers—expect regular sightings of lions, buffalo herds, giraffes, antelopes, and rare species.

4. Strong Cultural Encounters

Kidepo offers deep cultural interactions with the Karamojong and Ik communities, giving visitors a rich understanding of northern Uganda’s heritage.

5. Hot and Dry Climate

Daytime temperatures can be high, especially in the dry season. Carry enough water, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing.
